Serious Crash Near C Avenue/T47 South and Highway 30

October 23, 2025

At approximately 2:35 PM this afternoon, emergency crews responded to a serious crash near the intersection of C Avenue/T47 South and westbound Highway 30.

A fully loaded dump truck pulling a pup trailer had just entered Highway 30 heading west when it was rear-ended by a utility cargo van traveling in the same direction. The impact caused significant damage to the van, and the driver sustained serious injuries. Due to the severity of those injuries, the driver was airlifted from the scene for advanced medical treatment.

While emergency crews were responding to the initial crash, a secondary crash occurred nearby as a result of traffic congestion and slowed vehicles. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the secondary incident.

As a result of the crash, westbound traffic on Highway 30 was diverted at Highway T47 North from the time of the accident until approximately 6:00 PM to allow emergency crews to safely work the scene and clear the roadway.

The Tama County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Toledo EMS, Tama Medic 1, Toledo Fire, Montour Fire, Montour First Responders, Iowa State Patrol, Marshall County Sheriff's Office, and the Iowa Department of Transportation. We want to extend a special thank you to the Iowa DOT for their help with traffic control. It’s not often we get to work alongside them on scene, but in situations like this, their support made a big difference. Thanks also to our Tama County Dispatchers, who did a great job coordinating the response.

The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
